    Passing of a Loved One

    2/25/2008 08:10:00 AM

At 4:04 a.m. Central Time my grandmother on my mom's side passed away. This has been a long time coming between the combination of diabetes and Alzheimer's disease.

She fought the whole time - her heart would stop and they thought she was gone but then it would start again. Her husband could not handle it anymore so he went home. Three of her four daughters were with her when she passed away.

    Pakistan removed from the Internet

    by ZDNet's Richard Stiennon

4:30 PM Eastern (US). The telecom company that carries most of Pakistan's traffic, PCCW, has found it necessary to shut Pakistan off from the Internet while they filter out the malicious routes that a Pakistani ISP, PieNet, announced earlier today. Evidently PieNet took this step to enforce a decree from the Pakistani government that ISP's [...]

    SSL Google

    2/21/2008 05:28:00 AM

monkey Jim Edwards at itchurch.com pointed me to a Greasemonkey script that forces Firefox to use https:// instead of the default http://. This script is called SSLGoogle. I quickly found that this script will cause any Google search containing the word(s) calendar, docs, or mail to fail. This is because Google does not offer any secure connections while using their basic search engine.

I can tell the author was trying to make it such that any place that you can click on a link (Such as the Google navbar) to go to mail, docs, or calendar it will be secure even on the initial page load.

If you don't plan on ever having a search with those terms you might be alright, but it just isn't an option for me. There is a few approaches to take to fix this; you might find another way to be best suited to you. I found that limiting the include pages works best for me. The include pages that I am using now are: *mail.google.com*, *docs.google.com*, and *google.com/calendar*.

You can also use the Excluded Pages to exclude search pages such as *google.com/search*; however, I soon found that I would have to make an exclude also for images.google.com as well as every other Google page that has a search box on it. Incase you didn't notice, Google is a search company... they have a search box on practically every page they own.

The only other option I can see is to rewrite the script to be aware of the fact that someone could be doing a search for one of those keywords. This might be something I do down the road, but for now I am happy with how this is setup for me.

    Another Hot Date...

    2/20/2008 12:58:00 AM

    ...with my networks homework.

Yeah, maybe not as exciting as I would hope for, but I haven't been on a real date for awhile now nor do I have any plans to. But rather it is looking towards being another late night working on homework for my Network Analysis class.

There is something with our air system that causes it to get really hot in the rooms randomly on some nights. We usually keep our rooms about 68 (according to my clock thermostat) in the winter and my room has risen to 74.5 over the last hour. Hopefully it stops its upward rise soon.

    Twitter

    2/19/2008 11:12:00 AM

Over the last month or so I have started increasing my web presence once again. I am not sure how long this will last, but I will try to not burn myself out too fast.

Just recently I decided I would pick my Twitter back up. Now, I was really never a huge fan of Twitter, but I decided I would embed my Twitter comments in my blog. Now for those of you reading the RSS feed, you will probably never see this, but for everyone else they are just in that blue box near the top of the page.

I was also surprised to find 51 people following me on Twitter. Anyone want to explain what is so intriguing about following me?

A pastor from my church back home is a proud new father of an 8lb 21" long baby girl. Him and his wife, Erin, were very involved with the college ministry a couple years back when he was an intern. Now he is with us full time focusing on ministering to those in Downtown Houston.

You can find pictures located on their blog, Where Jesus Leads.

    Best Buy Update

    2/09/2008 11:48:00 AM

I am all over these blog updates today... 3 in a row, probably a new record.

I posted previously about my troubles with Best Buy. Here is an update:

January 30 (Morning) - Same Error message about the reward zone certificate.

January 31 (Afternoon) - Same Error message.

January 31 (Evening) - Called Rewards Zone Department. The best they could do for me is tell me that I will get a new Certificate issued to me Friday, February 8th. That is almost 2 weeks after my original attempt at a purchase.

February 7 - WOO HOO I finally got my Certificate refunded to me. Some where along the line I ended up with an extra $5 in Certificates. I am not sure what that is all about, but I will take it! Probably worth the time I spent on all of that. Now to call and place my order once again.

Adobe Stock Photos service to be discontinued

    2/09/2008 11:38:00 AM

As of April 1, 2008, the Adobe Stock Photos royalty-free image service will be discontinued. We made this decision in order to focus our efforts in other areas, and we want to share this news with you and let you know how it affects you.

    -From Adobe Email Publication

If you use Adobe Stock Photos you might want to be aware of this.

There is uninstallers for removing the Stock Photos feature from the Adobe Bridge:

    Download the Windows Uninstaller now.
    Download the Mac Uninstaller now.

I was surprised to see an uninstaller as over a 2 MB download, what do they have in there?

Google Translation + Gmail help people communicate

    2/09/2008 11:34:00 AM

We recently made our machine translation technology accessible from within Gmail and Google Talk, which gives mail and IM users instant access to translation capabilities at the point where they might most need them, e.g., when communicating with friends and colleagues around the world. If you find yourself wanting to translate a few words or short phrase, you can IM an appropriate chat-bot to obtain an immediate translation. As an example, the Google translation bot for going from English to Chinese is available as en2zh@bot.talk.google.com. In general, translation bots are named using two-letter codes for the source and target language.

Read HERE for the whole story.

I find this really cool. I think this is one step toward unified communication. Not unified in the technology sense, like where you have your voicemail forwarded to your email. But rather the ability to knock down language barriers such that I could be talking to someone and have a real time translation of what they are saying.

Just one more step toward making the global community more local.

    Take a look.
