Study: Vanity on the rise among college students

    2/27/2007 02:58:00 PM

Today's college students are more narcissistic and self-centered than their predecessors, according to a comprehensive new study by five psychologists who worry that the trend could be harmful to personal relationships and American society.

"We need to stop endlessly repeating 'You're special' and having children repeat that back," said the study's lead author, Professor Jean Twenge of San Diego State University. "Kids are self-centered enough already."

Obese child can stay with mother

    2/27/2007 02:15:00 PM

British social workers have decided to allow an eight-year-old boy who weighs almost 200 pounds (91 kilograms) to remain at home with his mother, who has refused to stop feeding him junk food.

Connor McCreaddie's mother says her 14-stone (196-pound) son will not eat healthy food like fruits and vegetables and had rejected a suggestion that she put a lock on the fridge...

While I was reading this article I went through mixed emotions. I first thought this was crazy that if a parent were to have an underweight child the would be taken away for malnutrition, but when we have a child at the opposite extreme nothing happens. The article made it sound like the mother had given up on trying to feed him healthy food and now just lets him eat what ever he wants, when ever he wants, and however much he wants. In my opinion this is clearly a case of neglecting the child.
However, there was some light near the end of the article:
Connor, from Wallsend, Newcastle, has lost one-and-a-half stone since the start of the year after his mother sought advice from health workers and a dietician.
In case you were wondering, 1 stone = 14 pounds... so that is 21 pounds lost in 2 months. This seems like a lot in such a little amount of time; however, it shows light on getting the child back on track. Hopefully he can continue down the right road.

    Is This Jesus's Tomb?

    2/26/2007 11:58:00 PM

There were two types of fame on display at the press conference Monday morning in a grand, sky-lit room at the back of the New York Public library. There was director James Cameron, towering like a a six foot-plus druidic monolith in a dark jacket and black turtleneck. And there was a light tan limestone box about two feet long lying on a table in front of Cameron - which the Titanic director was presenting as the burial box of Jesus Christ. All things being equal, we know who would be the bigger draw. (It was John Lennon who said he was bigger than Jesus, not Cameron, right?) But all things were not equal. Those in the room knew that Cameron was provably authentic. The other guy? Much more problematic...

Supreme Court weighs police action in 100 mph chase

    2/26/2007 10:50:00 PM

Reality-TV invaded the Supreme Court Monday, where a majority of justices seemed to support the actions of a deputy sheriff involved in a high-speed car chase and crash, caught on tape, that permanently injured a fleeing suspect.

At issue is whether Deputy Timothy Scott used "unreasonable" deadly force when he purposely drove his police cruiser into the back of Victor Harris' car in an effort to stop the vehicle. Harris become a quadriplegic as a result of the accident...

My thoughts: Maybe polices regarding police chases should be reevaluated, but, as far as I know, they have the right to do this. I don't see how the 4th amendment was broken in this case. Doesn't it just deal with probable cause? If someone flees from the police, that sure seems like probable cause to me.

    so tonight was crazyy

    2/21/2007 09:47:00 PM

So, I was in Bill Alexander's "Online with Bill Alexander: Netio Show" tonight and heard a story from Plow13. I found it very interesting and decided I would link to it, unfortunately it is on Virb which is invite only. If you want an invite let me know and I will send you one, but for now I will just copy his post:
So, i was chatting away in Bill alexanders podcast and it was just another normal day untill about an hour into the show...I hear screams coming from down the hall in my dorm. So i go to check it out and i open a door to some guy punching a girl...So, i do my best to break it up and now my adrenaline is all rushing and stuff..i'm kind of freaked out and i didn't know what to do..The guy ended up running off soon after i broke it up, so i started to call the cops. The girl is crying her eyes out and trying to tell me not to call...The cops show up and immediately i get hand cuffed...wtf! i get taken off into a cop car and driven down to the local station...after about 3 hours there they finally get it through their heads that i had nothing to do with this and i was just a guy who was trying to help out....So they release me and they don't even give me a ride home. So i had like a 30 minute walk home at 2am....ugh...i hate the police around here..they have nothing better to do except harass every student....

    You can't fire me!

    2/18/2007 05:34:00 PM

Before you read my post catch yourself up by reading the CNN article entitled Man Sues IBM over firing, says he's an Internet addict.

My first thought when reading this article was something along the lines of "this is crazy, companies should be able to fire anyone they want for using company owned computers and internet to go to sex chat sites." After continuing to read the rest of the story I started to have a change of heart. IBM encourages their employees to use their downtime to do personal web surfing. It is still inappropriate to visit sites of this nature, but that is never stated in IBMs policies.

However, I do still feel like this is just an excuse that the lawyers piled together to have it fall under the American with Disabilities Act. What defines a disability? Where should the line be drawn? If I yell at my boss every day could I just say I have post-traumatic stress disorder from someone of power over me who traumatized me? If anything I would say this would qualify more than someone who is addicted to internet sex and claims it's from seeing a friend die. This seems like a stretch to me.

If we let things like this happen it could easily get to the point that businesses have to hire everyone and can't ever fire anyone because there is some reason the government should be protecting us.
