You can't fire me!

Before you read my post catch yourself up by reading the CNN article entitled Man Sues IBM over firing, says he's an Internet addict.My first thought when reading this article was something along the lines of "this is crazy, companies should be able to fire anyone they want for using company owned computers and internet to go to sex chat sites." After continuing to read the rest of the story I started to have a change of heart. IBM encourages their employees to use their downtime to do personal web surfing. It is still inappropriate to visit sites of this nature, but that is never stated in IBMs policies.
However, I do still feel like this is just an excuse that the lawyers piled together to have it fall under the American with Disabilities Act. What defines a disability? Where should the line be drawn? If I yell at my boss every day could I just say I have post-traumatic stress disorder from someone of power over me who traumatized me? If anything I would say this would qualify more than someone who is addicted to internet sex and claims it's from seeing a friend die. This seems like a stretch to me.
If we let things like this happen it could easily get to the point that businesses have to hire everyone and can't ever fire anyone because there is some reason the government should be protecting us. 0 comments
